Biological Hazards in the Workplace

The Model Code of Practice: Managing the risks of biological hazards at work provides practical guidance for employers in cleaning, security, land remediation, and public spaces to protect staff from biological hazards like viruses, bacteria, parasites, and mould. These hazards exist in all workplaces and can cause illness or injury, especially for those working closely with the public, contaminated materials, animals, or pests.

Common exposures include cleaners handling waste or hightouch surfaces, and security staff interacting with the public or working in busy locations. Biological hazards may also be introduced from the community.

Employers are required under health and safety laws to manage these risks as far as reasonably possible. Simple measures include maintaining cleanliness and ventilation, providing hygiene training, and encouraging vaccinations.

The Model Code clarifies risks and controls for any workplace where exposure is likely, promoting safer environments for workers.
